MagicMtn Musical Massage: That Time I Tried to Start a Massage Practice

A MagicMtn Musical Massage will make you go “MMMM”!

Earlier this year, I tried to start a massage practice. My unique selling proposition was that I’d cater it to ravers, mainly by synchronizing the massage to EDM, but with lots of other little details that ravers would appreciate. In this post, I’ll be talking about the background, the process, why I had to stop in the end, and what I learned from it all. Enjoy! Continue reading

My Favorite Thing to Hear

I like hearing primal grunts and clanging iron…But that’s only part of what this post is about!

If you rave, you know that “I love you” is not an uncommon thing to hear. And it really is great to hear, I’m not trying to sell it short.

But you know what I like to hear even more than “I love you”?

“You inspire me.” Continue reading

My Daily Kefir Smoothie

The majority of healthy weirdos have some sort of smoothie or juice they consume on a daily or semi-daily basis. I’m one of them =P

Consider the decision-making process that goes into a smoothie. What goes into it, how it’s made, and how it’s consumed. With so much room for design, I think it reveals a lot about that person’s knowledge, goals, and values. In that vein, I’d like to share with you my daily smoothie!

Here are the ingredients, in the order that I place them into the blender: Continue reading

What Unites Us?

Back in December, my friend Alice and I had one of those awesome late-night talks. One of the things that I remember most was what she said about her relationship with Evan, her boyfriend of many years. While explaining the thought process behind some big decisions she had to make soon, she said…

“Evan and I are united by our pursuit of truth.”

I thought that was beautiful. I’ve been asking that question, “What unites you?” to many people ever since. Continue reading

Open Letter from Your Friend with Dietary Restrictions

Hello Dear,

How are you? I hope this letter finds you well. I want to start by sincerely thanking you for inviting me to and/or having me at your event.

As the holiday season kicks in, folks are coming together more often, and with an increased focus on food. I felt like this would be a good time to clarify a few things. Airing these out should make life easier for everyone concerned, and avoid future conflict or unpleasantries =)

I’ll sometimes speak from the plural “we” and “us,” because I feel these statements can be shared by the majority of people who are on some form of restricted diet. We restrict different things, in different quantities, at different times of our lives, and for different reasons, but here are some general sentiments that we all share.

The first one is…

1. You don’t have to make special accommodations for us.

You really don’t. We’ve been at this for a long time and we know how to make do in any eating situation. Or, we’re new, and we need to learn how to do this anyway.

2. Sometimes, we prepare in advance by eating a bit more before the event. We don’t mean disrespect.

How My Farts Stopped Stinking

"Run! Run! The fog is poison!" - Katniss Everdeen, the day she met me after post-workout ice cream.

“Run! Run! The fog is poison!” – Katniss Everdeen, the day she met me after post-workout ice cream.

The problem

My farts used to smell terrible. Farts in general are already unpleasant, but mine were truly terrible. This was confirmed during my first year in college. While chillin’ in the common area, out of courtesy I warned my new suitemates of my impending gas. When it came, every one was shocked. I was shocked at just how bad they reacted, and they of course were shocked at just how bad it smelled. From then on they could recognize my signature stank. But everywhere else, if I didn’t say anything, the blame often fell on someone else or it wouldn’t come up at all. Fortunately (for me), they were usually silent. But the one person who suffered most and could not escape from my farts though was Cherry, who had to share a bed with me. And I’m glad I was able to finally get my farts to stop stinking, for her sake =) Continue reading

Stories: A Simple Way to Manage Complicated Emotions

Emotions. As wild, mysterious, and unpredictable as the seas. Sometimes, they seem impossible to understand…

But you know what’s easy to understand? Stories. In fact, our brains use stories primarily to help us understand. And that’s pretty great for us, because emotions are stories.

Okay, that’s a bit bold. Let’s try this: Without a story, there is no emotion.

Few people are better than boy bands at getting people emotional. Also, good song! #Relevant
